MEMORY AND PlACE

The journey that made this work happened across 3 locations, over 3 months within 30 miles of Dundee. Discovering lochs in the surrounding area of Dundee presented the opportunity to form memories in places I was less familiar with. Placing the sculptures into the environment allowed their surroundings to influence them. By mixing colours of clay, my ceramic practice embraces unpredictability which compliments my research on episodic memory formation. Working with clay became the activity of remembering whilst visiting the 3 locations became the context of what is being remembered. ceramics

Throughout my work, place provides the defining character to memory, rendering it an event. Concerned with issues such as time and strength, this work celebrates the transient permanence of human experiences. My video episodic memory includes sound recordings each journey such as bird sound, leaves falling and footsteps. The sound of the camera lens refocusing exposes human interaction within the seemingly uninterrupted landscape.
